A MUM-OF-FOUR who lost three teeth to tooth decay has been paid £17,000 by a Barnton dentist.

Jane East, 35, from Barnton, successfully settled out of court with Oasis Dental Care Barnton in October 2016.

The dentist denied liability.

Between 2009 and 2014 Ms East visited Dr Msayi Jerry Skhosana for regular check-ups.

Miss East had been a patient of Dr Skhosana’s for many years.

However, problems became apparent in March 2012 when Dr Skhosana placed two fillings at a check-up appointment.

Miss East was back with Dr Skhosana a few weeks later complaining about pain in another tooth, and the dentist prescribed antibiotics.

She continued to see Dr Skhosana for regular check-ups but in March 2013 her dental problems escalated when she started suffering from severe toothache, sensitivity, and swelling on the side of her mouth.

Dr Skhosana prescribed antibiotics but Miss East said they did not make a difference.

“I was really worried that despite taking the antibiotics, the pain and swelling kept getting worse,” Miss East said.

“It reached the point where I could barely open my mouth because it was so painful.

"So I made yet another appointment with Dr Skhosana.”

At this appointment Dr Skhosana said the solution was to extract one of Miss East’s wisdom teeth which had become impacted, or blocked by the other teeth when pushing through her gum.

Dr Skhosana referred her to hospital for the procedure, but it was at hospital that the extent of Miss East’s problems were revealed.

She said: “The hospital surgeons couldn’t believe the state of my teeth.

"They said I needed immediate treatment.

“I was devastated to discover that not one, but three of my teeth needed to be extracted.”

After having her teeth removed Miss East contacted the Dental Law Partnership, which took on her case in September 2015.

The case was settled in October 2016 when the dentist paid £17,000 in an out of court settlement.

Tim Armitage of the Dental Law Partnership said: “What our client went through is completely unnecessary.”

Dr Skhosana was not available for comment at the time of going to press.

Oasis Dental Care declined to comment.
