PARISH council chairman Alison Gerrard said she was reassured that a snake found on playing fields was harmless.

Council officer Columb McPhillips got more than he bargained for when he patrolled Gadbrook Park in Rudheath on Wednesday.

Columb is a regulatory services officer at Cheshire West and Chester Council, and is used to overseeing the collection of stray dogs as part of his normal duties.

However it was not a dog he was confronted by, but a four-feet long adult corn snake.

After receiving a complaint about dogs being allowed to roam free on Gadbrook Park, Columb was walking around the site, checking for dog fouling, when he spotted the snake.

Councillor Karen Shore said: “Thankfully Columb managed to catch the snake, and it is now in safe custody at one of the borough’s licensed pet shops. This breed of snake is harmless and is actually well-known for escaping from homes.”

Corn snakes are docile, lack venom, and are popular as pets.

Rudheath Parish Council chairman Cllr Alison Gerrard said she was surprised to hear a snake had been found on the Gadbrook Park playing fields.

She said: “I’m reassured by the comment from the council that the snake is harmless, and if anyone finds a snake in the park I would ask them to phone Cheshire West or the parish council.”
