A 50-year-old man raped a teenager in his basement while his family slept upstairs, a court has heard.

Andrew Abraham is accused of raping a 19-year-old woman last November following a late-night drinking session in his hot tub.

On Monday, as Abraham’s trial began at Warrington Crown Court, the jury were shown the young woman’s police interview.

The victim – who cannot be named for legal reasons – claimed she was invited to Abraham’s then family home in Emmettt Street, Barnton, in the early hours of November 29, 2015, to try out his hot tub.

The court heard that Abraham, who was 49 at the time, lived with his partner and her two children.

The 19-year-old girl, who is now 20, went to Abraham’s house with her sister and a friend around 1.30am on November 29.

She told the interviewer that she had been drinking since 9.30pm that night and continued when she got to Abraham’s house.

While the group was in the hot tub, which was in a basement/bar area, the teenager claimed Abraham put his arm around her.

Her friend and sister left some time later, which is when Abraham stepped up his advances, the court was told.

She said: “He came back downstairs and said something like ‘I think they’ve gone now’. I just lay there.

"That’s when he came to lie behind me.

"I think he said something like ‘give me a cuddle, kid’.

“I hugged him but not like that, as friends. I just thought he’d give me a quick hug.

"That’s when he started to touch me.

“I felt uncomfortable. I didn’t expect him to do that.

"I think when he first came down I was kind of awake, but I just lay there.”

She said the defendant then started touching her in intimate places and she tried to move his hand away.

“At this point I was pretending to be asleep. I didn’t know what to do. I just lay there still,” she said.

She said he did not stop. She claims Abraham raped her for a “couple of minutes”.

Afterwards, while sitting on the end of the bed, she said he swore and said “I shouldn’t have done that”.

She said he went upstairs and returned some time later and told her she could stay in the spare bedroom.

She left and went to a friend’s house and the incident was reported to the police shortly after.

Abraham was arrested later that day.

He told police that he had sex with the woman but maintained it was consensual.

He said he had been drinking since the early afternoon.

Abraham, whose home address is now Saltersford Lock, Barnton, is charged with three counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual assault by penetration and one count of rape.

He denies all of the charges.

The trial continues.
