ROTARIANS have been marking World Polio Day by planting Purple4Polio.

Working with the Canal and River Trust and Age UK's Men in Sheds, the Rotary Club of Northwich has installed three large planters at Lock Street, Northwich, alongside a section of the Weaver Navigation the club has adopted.

In recent months a team of volunteers from the club has been removing overhanging branches and litter, clearing weed growth and painting fencing.

The most recent work party saw the installation of the planters made by Men in Sheds.

These have been planted with five thousand crocus corms and several hundred viola plants.

All the plants are purple and mark World Polio Day on October 24, and are part of Rotary International's End Polio Now campaign.

Clubs across the UK and Ireland have been encouraged to Plant Purple4Polio, and through the purchase of crocus corms are providing much-needed funding for the battle against polio.

The planters face the River Weaver and Barons Quay and will provide a splash of colour for visitors to the area.

The event has been added to Great Britain and Ireland's Rotary Crocus Planting Map - see rotarygbi.org/what-we-do/purple4polio/map, where more about the End Polio Now campaign can be found.
