MORE than two hundred entries featured in a show which brought Barnton together on Saturday.

Barnton Community Primary School was the venue for the third Barnton Flower and Produce Show, and the sun shone as people bearing cakes, jams, plants, photographs and craft items poured through the doors.

“For the organising volunteers it was a heart-warming sight after months of preparation and advertising to bring about an event for the community to enjoy,” said Carol Ashdown, one of the organisers.

“The many children’s entries were varied and fun, showing lots of talent and enthusiasm.

“Well done to the children entering the Mini's and Maxi's classes. You did a smashing job.”

Alongside the show there was a harvest bring and buy table in aid of a local charity supporting children with autism and their families.

“The response to requests for items of craft, cookery and plants was really wonderful, and we are very grateful for the kindness of those who donated to this important charity,” said Carol.

“Our thanks to Mrs H Cresswell, who spent the day on the stall selling items and raising awareness of the issues children with autism face and their support needs and those of their families.

“This year we included new challenges of pot plants and cacti and home brewing.

“Another feature was a financial award to each participant who has achieved Best in Class, received with thanks from Barnton Parish Council and Barnton Pharmacy in Runcorn Road, M.Tyrrell, G.I. Ashdown locksmiths, Crafty Stitches and Northwich Art Shop.”

From those achieving Best in Class one goes forward to win the Best in Show Shield presented by F. Hayes and Son, funeral directors of Lydyett Lane, Barnton.”

The Best in Class winners were as follows.

Home-grown vegetables; Keith Reading with tomatoes on the vine.

Fruit and Herbs, with the largest cooking apple; Gill Dale.

Flowers, with a foliage array; Betty Hankey.

Home Baking, with a lemon drizzle cake; Elaine Murphy.

For Preserves the judges gave a joint award for jars of chutney to Julie Tomkins and Elaine Murphy.

Best in Class for jewellery items was won by June Parkes.

The Photography class was won with a picture of the Trent and Mersey Canal by Peter Leicester, who also won in the Pot plants and Cacti with a cactus.

The Home Brewing class was won by Cath Smith for a damson gin. The Best in Show Shield was awarded by Pat Dyson on behalf of F. Hayes and Son to Keith Reading.

“Congratulations to all and to everyone who gave their time to participate and help on the day,” added Carol.

“Well done for making it a good day for everyone there.

“Special thanks to all the volunteers, judges and prize-givers for their generosity, to Barnton Silver Band, whose playing during the viewing made the day perfect, to the head teacher and staff of Barnton Community Primary School for use of the hall and facilities, and Barnton Parish Council for help with printing and article space in Tunnel Top.”
