A POPULAR pub that mysteriously closed its doors to the public has been taken over by another company.

The Hollow Tree in Tarporley road, Stretton, ceased trading earlier this month.

The Guardian can now reveal the pub has been purchased by 16 Hospitality, which owns The Swan in Tarporley and The Crown at Goostrey.

A spokesman for the hospitality firm said the site will be renamed and will undergo a full refurbishment. The food and drinks menu will be completely overhauled.

It will also offer guestrooms.

Edward Barlow, managing director of 16 Hospitality, said: “We are thrilled to have secured this site as it has so much potential to do really well.

“It’s in an enviable location with so much to do and see on the doorstep, and we are going to be putting building plans and a full refurbishment into fruition, including en-suite guest rooms.

“We are sure there will be a positive reaction to our plans from visitors and locals alike, as our research has showed that there is demand for a quality Inn with real ale, fresh, unpretentious yet quality food and comfortable accommodation.”

Mystery surrounded the fate of the pub, which was formerly owned by Mitchells and Butlers, after a notice was put up outside the entrance.

The notice said: "The Hollow Tree has now ceased trading, we would like to thank all our guests for their loyal custom and support over the years.

"Team Hollow Tree."

The pub’s website was taken down and all of its social media accounts have been deleted.
