YOUNGSTERS in Leftwich join in with the Summer Olympics thanks to a free holiday club.

The 2016 Summer Olympics takes place in Rio this August.

To celebrate, Emmanuel Church in Leftwich will hold a holiday club during the last week of the summer holidays, from August 30 to July 2, 10am-2pm.

The club will be for children aged between five-11 and will see children take part in a variety of ‘silly’ sporty games throughout the week.

Beck Mainwaring, 22, a volunteer at the church and one of the organisers, said: “Last year we did epic explorers and this year we decided to do a sporty theme because of the Olympics.

“The children love it, they get really involved.

“Lots of them come to the midweek club we have in school time on a Thursday. So this is like a special version of that for them.”

A ‘family Olympics’ will also be held on the evening of Friday, July 2.

Families will take to Leftwich green to face off in a number of games. This will be followed by prize giving.

Beck said: “Throughout the week there will be lots of fun and silliness such as pies being thrown in the team leaders' faces.

“Usually the children love it and the volunteers from Emmanuel Church love to plan and run it.”

Other activities include crafts, song-singing and bible reading and discussion.

“It is quite important to us because it is what we believe in”, Beck, who is beginning an internship at Emmanuel Church Leftwich, said.

““We will tell some stories about the life of Jesus. We then split into smaller groups so the children can discuss it.

“It’s similar to what they do in the midweek club. Usually they like to hear different opinions and different thoughts. We’ve had varying levels of enthusiasm over the years.

“But it’s good for them to hear it and they can make up their own decisions.”

The club is free to all and is being paid for through church funds.
