A CLUB of teenagers committed to tackling issues on a local and global scale has held its first charter night.

The Interact Club of Sir John Deane's College, part of the Rotary International Organisation, was launched in 2014 and has 10 members.

At the charter dinner, held at Winnington Park Recreation Club, the teenagers were praised by Christopher Sumner, district governor, for their commitment to the community and their plans for an overseas project to help build a school classroom in Cambodia.

The charter dinner, attended by college members, their families and members of the Rotary Club of Northwich, also followed the club's biggest fundraiser to date, a jazz concert at Northwich Memorial Court that raised more than £1,500 for St Luke's Hospice.

An audience of 180 people filled the hall to hear music from the Sir John Deane's Jazz Band and a number of singers from the college.

Singers included Zara Okoro, formerly a pupil of St Nicholas RC High School, Darcey Mackay, formerly of The County High School Leftwich, Alexandra Graham, formerly of North Cestrian Grammar School, Seth Hamill, formerly of Lymm High School, Lily Cantwell Browne, formerly of Sandbach County High School for Girls, Tom Oliver, formerly of Wellington Road School Altrincham, and Vicky Tate, formerly of Holmes Chapel Comprehensive.

Saxophonists included Bethan Jones, formerly of St Nicholas RC High School, Andrew Lewis, formerly of Hartford High School, Matthew Allen, formerly of Sale Grammar School, and Ella Dumpleton, formerly of Cransley School.

Ella Dumpleton, who is in the Upper Sixth at the college, is the president of the Interact Club.

Jane Rapuano, achievement and progress officer at Sir John Deane's College, said: "The Sir John Deane’s Interact Club led by Ella has worked really hard to make the event a success and successful fundraiser but it couldn’t have been accomplished without the participation of the College Jazz Band and solo performers lead by music teacher Tim Murphy who co-ordinates the band.

"Many of the audience left the venue heaping praise onto our talented performers.

"It was a fantastic night and a hugely successful fundraiser."

Interact is for young people aged between 12 and 18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care about.

Every Interact club carries out two service projects a year, including one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding.

Interact clubs meet twice a month to discuss, decide and organise a service project, a charity fundraising or social event.
