TWO homegrown folk artists will be performing at Northwich Folk Club this week.

On Friday, January 15, Northwich Folk Club welcomes Pete Coe to the Harlequin Theatre as its first guest of the year.

Pete's probably best known for his richly varied solo work, stretching across the whole range of the folk umbrella from the English tradition to dance tunes of many shapes and sizes to his own devastatingly potent original songs.

Born in Northwich he first started performing at the Songwainers Club while at Cheltenham College and early on was drawn to the more obscure traditional folk songs.

He is a fine solo performer, and an energetic activist for the scene as well.

He has founded Ryburn 3 Step, run folk clubs, dances and workshops in the Ripponden/Halifax area, while also teaching music and dancing at schools.

He's one of the most committed, most versatile, most important folk artists in Britain.

Supporting Pete on the evening will be fellow Cheshire man Chris Tavener.

Chris is a satirical singer-songwriter known for his mischievously witty lyrics, well-crafted songwriting and a vintage sound. Originally from Northwich, Chris grew up listening to rock music, 60's folk and indie.

From the age of 17 he was writing his own material, mostly about himself.

Now 22, he critiques modern society and tells unique stories in whimsical, olde-worlde acoustic songs.

Tickets are priced at £8 or £6 for club members and are available either via DAN (danarts.co.uk), Brenda Yates on 01565733197 or tickets@northwichfolk.co.uk or at Northwich Art Shop, 111 Witton St.

Doors open at 8pm for an 8.30pm start.
