A SHOPPING centre in Sandiway is putting forward plans for 90 new houses and an assisted living complex as part of an extensive remodelling of its

site.

The housing developments are being proposed to underpin Blakemere Village's vision for a new modern signature building and the refurbishment of its existing facilities.

The centre is teaming up with investment partner Catesby Estates Limited to deliver the scheme.

Ginny Brooks-White, partner of Blakemere Village, said; "Retail is changing and so must Blakemere Village if we are to be here for years to come.

"We need more people to visit us, to stay longer and spend more money.

"The only way to do this is to make Blakemere Village a more visible and modern place to shop.

"Without this proposed investment package we would face an uncertain future.

"Blakemere Village has been at the cornerstone of the local economy for more than 20 years and we are proud of our strong local roots.

"So earlier this year we set up a community forum and invited residents to speak with us about the future.

"Our plans for a new flagship building, refurbishments and wayfinding improvements are inspired by the feedback we received through this process."

The centre is home to 41 businesses, including independent traders, food and drink outlets and outdoor activity providers, and employs 217 people.

Fergus Thomas, from Catesby Estates Limited, said: "Our proposals to invest in Blakemere Village will unlock a multi-million pound boost for the local economy, safeguarding the jobs of existing workers and creating new jobs at Blakemere Village.

"New jobs will also be created through delivering new homes and specialist care and assisted living accommodation on land next to Blakemere Village."

A public consultation has been launched on the proposals and an exhibition will be held at Blakemere Village from 3pm to 7pm on Thursday, December 3.
