SECRETS to saving money on energy bills are being revealed as part of Big Energy Saving Week.

Drop in sessions are taking place at Northwich and Winsford libraries to show people how to switch energy supplier to get the best deals and how to make sure they are getting any financial support they are entitled to.

Cheshire West Citizens Advice is part of Big Energy Saving Week, which is a joint campaign with Energy Saving Trust, the Department of Energy ad Climate Change and Citizens Advice.

It follows an Ipsos MORI survey that reveals more than 12 million people do not believe switching could save them money, 40 per cent of people do not know how to help older people switch and 16 million householders believe switching myths.

Myths include people's beliefs that they will be disconnected while changing supplier, tenants cannot switch without their landlord's permission, prepayment customers cannot switch if they are in debt and people cannot change supplier when they move house.

Linda Crosbie, energy champion at Cheshire West Citizens Advice, said: "Switching myths mean people are missing out on saving money on their energy bills.

"By shopping around and switching to a different energy deal consumers can cut hundreds of pounds from their gas and electricity bills.

"Whether you own your home or rent it, and regardless of whether you have a prepayment meter, there are savings to be made.

"The process of shopping around and switching is fairly straightforward but some people might be unsure about how to find the best tariff.

"Others might be put off by common myths about switching."

Consumers are advised to visit BenAnEnergyShopper.com to find out how much they can save by switching.

Big Energy Saving Week is also to spread awareness of advice and support like the Warm Home Discount, Priority Services Register, Cold Weather Payments or Energy Best Deal Extra.

Linda said: "In 2013 £17 billion in benefits and tax credits went unclaimed, enough to cover the annual fuel bills of 13.5 million households."

Energy saving drop in sessions will take place at Northwich Library on November 3 and at Winsford Library on November 5, both sessions are from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
