CARRIER bags are urgently needed by a group trying to feed those in need.

Mid Cheshire Foodbank (MCFB) is appealing for donations of plastic carrier bags following the introduction of the 5p charge.

It uses the bags to provide food so that it resembles a supermarket shop.

MCFB hopes to build up a stock of bags during the changeover period until clients become aware they need to bring their own.

The foodbank, which was launched in 2012, fed 2,797 individuals in the year 2014 to 2015.

Of these, 40 per cent were children.

MCFB said so far this year there is a 10 per cent increase on these figures.

The group provides food parcels for people referred by professional services like Citizens Advice, social care organisations and schools.

It has been praised following its annual inspection by the Trussell Trust, which works with groups across the country to set up foodbanks.

The report from Matt Cameron, trust's regional development officer, described MCFB as an 'impressive and highly effective project'.

He said: "Mid Cheshire Foodbank... is run to a high standard and in a professional, loving and compassionate manner."

He added: "The hard work, commitment and dedication of the trustees, the volunteers and indeed the whole community have not gone unnoticed and you should feel a considerable sense of joy in all that you have created."

MCFB thanked its volunteers, partners and supporters for their help in the group's success, which has seen 35 tonnes of food donated by individuals, schools, churches and other organisations.

A spokesman said: "MCFB are also grateful to all who donate regularly through the permanent collection boxes in Tesco and Waitrose stores plus Abbeycroft Vets.

"The warehouse is currently very busy receiving many harvest festival collections from churches and schools.

"We could not do what we do without these very generous donations. Thank you."
