A JUNIOR football team who were stripped of their silverware by Mid Cheshire FA have now seen their cup go to the team they defeated.
Kingsmead Junior FC u13s won their cup final against Sandbach United 2-0 last month and were presented with their cup and medals. However they were then told the cup and medals had to be returned and the game replayed because it was called off eight minutes from full-time due to torrential rain.
Kingsmead refused to play the full game again from 0-0 and the cup has now been given to the team they beat in the final, Sandbach United.
Paul Phipps, dad of Kingsmead u13s player Kyle, said: “It doesn’t surprise me that the Sandbach have been awarded the cup. The game was supposed to have been replayed on May 10 but we refused to play it.
“It’s ridiculous to ask the kids to play the game again from 0-0 when they were 2-0 up with eight minutes to go and were presented with the cup.”
Mid Cheshire FA refused to comment when approached by the Guardian but the official line on the FA website states that Sandbach won the game after ‘Kingsmead JFC withdrew from competition.’
Sandbach United has accepted the cup which was taken from Kingsmead after the cup final win but also refused to comment when approached by the Guardian.
Despite the boys being told to give back the cup and their medals to Mid Cheshire FA, Paul said they have kept their medals.
Paul added: “The original trophy has been returned but each child has kept hold of their medal and so far there has been no further pressure to give them up.”
