THE story behind the showpiece art installation at the heart of Northwich’s £80m Barons Quay scheme is to be revealed at a special event hosted by the artist herself.

Rebecca Gouldson will give an illustrated presentation at Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse this Saturday, May 2, from 3pm to 4pm.

The event, free to attend, will offer a fascinating insight into the inspiration, research and design process that shaped the artwork that will sit at the gateway to the new retail and leisure quarter.

Rebecca won a Cheshire West and Chester Council contest in autumn 2014 to develop an art installation for the 219m wall alongside the travellator in the Asda store.

In reference to the town’s salt mining heritage, her design will feature a series of etched metal cylinders - some measuring a metre long - that will be suspended from the ceiling.

Rebecca said: "This commission is an exciting opportunity for me to create a large scale artwork in etched metal, influenced by one of my favourite sources of inspiration; historic industry.

“Northwich has a wealth of industrial heritage to learn about and I've really enjoyed visiting the local archives in Chester, and the Weaver Hall Museum, among other places of significance in the area."
