A RECORD total was raised in Northwich during a Poppy Appeal that marked the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The annual Royal British Legion appeal raised more than £24,500 in Northwich in 2014.

Marshall Hunter, Poppy Appeal organiser for the area, said: "This is the highest figure ever achieved for Northwich.

"We wish to thank the general public for their continued support.

"We also would like to thank all the businesses and supermarkets for their help and support and to Chester West and Chester Council and Northwich Town Council for their help and support.

"A special thanks to all the collectors, to 146 Air Cadets and Northwich ACF.

"As we remember and celebrate the anniversary of the First World War it is important to also remember all the conflicts since then that have involved our Armed Forces.

"The need to provide help and support for all the ex-service community is forefront of the work of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal."
