VALUE your vote mid-Cheshire.

That’s the message the Guardian wants to spread as the build-up to the general elections gets into full swing.

When Prime Minister David Cameron visited Northwich in October 2014 he said it was important to remind people what it meant to vote at any election.

And with just 71 days to go until residents head to the voting booths the Guardian has launched its Value Your Vote campaign.

Mr Cameron said: “You’ve got to make sure people value their vote.

“Two things I’d say – it’s worth reminding people how valuable it is to have a vote.

“Many people across the world don’t have a say on who governs them, and it’s worth reminding people how much was given up to get the vote.

“I think the key thing, and this is what happened in Scotland, is that people voted because they really felt it mattered.

“In Scotland it was an existential question — you are either going to stay part of the United Kingdom or separate yourself off and people thought it was incredibly important.

“It’s one of the most important elections of our generation and there is a very big difference between the parties and there is a very big choice and I think we will see turnout go up.”

In 2010, Conservative candidate Graham Evans pipped Labour’s John Stockton by 991 votes to win the Weaver Vale seat.

Tatton, Eddisbury and Congleton are also in the hands of the Conservatives.

Carla Flynn, Guardian editor, said: “We have launched this campaign to encourage readers to exercise their right to vote.

“What happens in government – both at national and local level – has a direct effect on each and every one of us.

“In the general election in 2005 there was only a 61 per cent turnout, increasing to just 65 per cent in 2010. What might have happened if the other 19 million people had gone to the ballot box?"
