VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help repair the towpath at Saltersford Basin.

The call comes from Lynn Gibbon, chairman of Barnton Community Group, which is seeking support for the next stage of the Barnton Gateway project, which is led by the group.

The repairs are to take place over a weekend, and it is hoped to undertake the work in the next few months.

Group members and volunteers spent last weekend completing work on laying 400 yards of new towpath alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal at Barnton.

The work is the latest stage of the project, which began in 2013 and is aimed at improving the entrance to Barnton.

“In October volunteers laid seven tonnes of gravel with the Canal and River Trust, and last weekend we laid a further 10 tonnes to complete the work,” said Lynn.

“The new towpath surface has made such a difference in eradicating the dreadful quagmire, which was difficult to navigate for walkers and cyclists, and will help encourage boaters to stop and use the village facilities.”

Volunteers were treated to bacon and sausage sandwiches and tea by Christina Westwell, who lives alongside the canal.

Lynn added: “The Gateway project is aimed at improving the entrance to Barnton for the many visitors by canal boat and the walkers and cyclists who use this stretch of canal for recreation, and enhancing Tunnel Top, the village’s iconic emblem, Barnton being the only village in England with two tunnels.”

The project began with painting the railings alongside the entrance to the canal and clearing sandstone walls of vegetation, followed by painting the railings leading to Tunnel Top and clearing the sets up to the top of the tunnel.

The planned work at Saltersford Basin involves repairing the towpath and cleaning the old horse trough and the surrounding area.

“We have more than 20 volunteers of all ages, from 10 to 80, who help out on a regular basis and their help is very much appreciated and invaluable, as these tasks could not be completed without them,” said Lynn.

“All help is welcome, and everyone enjoys themselves and feels a great sense of satisfaction. We must not forget the help from our partners the Canal and River Trust, which provides help and all the materials.”
