NORTHWICH Running Club has attracted five new members in the past few weeks following an article about the new club in the Guardian.

“The new guys have not really run before, and within a short time have been amazing,” said run leader Alan Wilcox.

“As part of a small supportive group they have made the effort together to get out there and have a go.

“It’s not all running to start with, we make sure everyone does what they are able to do and are comfortable doing. It’s about taking the time to build up your confidence as well as your fitness.”

The new members have joined in the weekly free Delamere parkrun, a five-kilometre timed run held every Saturday at 9am organised and managed by volunteers.

“These guys are brilliant and are to be thanked for their efforts and support to the running community,” said Alan.

Sue Alley from Comberbach completed her first 5km event after a week with Northwich Running Club.

“I would never have been able to do this on my own - it’s such a great feeling, and having the support there makes it so much easier,” she said.

“It’s OK to walk sections and run when I can, no-one expects you to do anything other than try, and everyone makes sure I don’t do too much too soon.”

RunEngland has funded vital training for the club so it has qualified run leaders to help plan and support new runners.

“There are lots of great clubs and running groups out there, and I would urge everyone thinking about it to go to the RunEngland website to find a local group and give it a try,” said Alan.

“RunEngland are about encouraging anyone to take up this great form of exercise.”
