A COMEDY hour kept residents entertained in Northwich.

Brian Lloyd, a comedian who was also leader of the Labour group on the former Vale Royal Borough Council, told jokes and did impressions at Moreton's Meade, in Weaverham.

He also told stories from his days working with famous comedians on the northern club circuit.

The event was part of the Out of Hours project, set up to give older people somewhere to socialise.

Cheshire Community Development Trust, formerly Vale Royal Council for Voluntary Service, established what it then called respite groups 25 years ago.

These involved organising evening activities for older people aimed at giving carers a break but over the years their purpose changed.

Arthur Neil, the trust's chief executive, said: "We now see the groups as an opportunity to combat social isolation, keep people active and build new friendships."

The trust has long established groups in Northwich, Winsford, Rudheath and Tarporley and, thanks to support from Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire Community Foundation, has extended to Chester, Davenham and Weaverham with a new group planned for Ellesmere Port in January.

Arthur said: "Each group is a little different but they all offer a combination of talks, bingo, entertainment, meals out and whatever the members want.

"Each group meets weekly apart from the fortnightly Tarporley group and members welcome the opportunity to get out and have some company and a bit of fun.’ For more information ring Arthur Neil on 01606 723182 or email aneil@cheshirecdt.org.uk.
