VILLAGERS are being invited to take part in a novel event to remember local men who gave their lives in The First World War.

Residents can write a dedication to one of the 88 soldiers who died on a flag, the other side of which will feature the soldier’s name.

At 11am on Saturday, November 8, spring flowering bulbs will be planted in the garden at Barnton Library, and the little flags inserted above the bulbs.

The event is being organised by the library, and follows research by library volunteer Sally Walker into soldiers from the village who died in the conflict.

“From her research Sally has created a lovely folder holding information relating to each of the soldiers – many of who are from the same families,” said Catherine Mason, senior customer services representative at Barnton Library.

“Anyone who wishes to ensure that every Barnton man is remembered is invited to come into the library, where they will be given a paper flag on which they write a personal dedication to one of the soldiers.

“The flags will soon weather, but the bulbs, hopefully, will keep coming for many years.

“This is an activity aimed at anyone with a connection with Barnton, including groups and families, so, please contact the library and ask how you can be involved.”
