HUNDREDS of people raced to a re-launch event with the formula for success.

The former Christopher Neil car dealership, in Manchester Road, has reopened as Oakmere Lotus and held a champagne and canapé reception starring a Formula One car to celebrate.

Around 300 people visited the showroom, which also put together a display of historic Lotus vehicles through the years.

Lisa Forbes, marketing manager for Oakmere Motor Group, said: "The turnout was fantastic.

"The event was attended by more than 300 people with the evening canapé reception being the real highlight, with in excess of 250 people mingling inside and outside the showroom – the atmosphere was electric."

Oakmere Motor Group began life around 30 years ago breaking Lotuses apart and selling them for parts.

During its three decades in business the family firm grew into a fully-fledged Lotus dealership for new and used cars, offering service, repairs and body shop.

It shifted the focus away from Lotus following the tragic death of the late owner Neil Shepherson's son Ben.

Now the firm has decided to return to the brand, has its franchise back and has a new-look showroom.

Lisa said: "The main reason for the night was to get the word out that we're back, bigger and better than before."

Neil's wife Louise and Amy, one of his daughters, attended the launch where new managing director Jonathan Jarratt gave a touching speech and footage was shown of Neil talking of his love of Lotus.

His 1973 Lotus Elan Sprint has also been donated to the showroom by his family.
