Appeal for players hopes to strike the right note

CORNET players are being sought by Barnton Silver Band to help swell its ranks.

The band has received a £250 boost from Barnton Parish Council, and is planning a charity concert in July.

“We are looking for another two or three cornet players,” said band chairperson Carol Braithwaite.

“They would really boost our ranks and would help the band to create a fuller sound.”

The parish council grant will be used to maintain the band’s existing instruments.

“With the best will in the world instruments get dropped and springs wear out,” said Carol.

“We look to maintain instruments when we can because replacing one can cost £100 for a second-hand instrument, and I would like to thank the council for its support.”

The band is planning a concert at Barnton Community Primary School on July 19 in aid of Barnton and Anderton Royal British Legion.

The band was established in 1891, and has about 19 regular players. It meets weekly at Little Leigh Village Hall, and has a training band and main band.

Penny Muirson and her daughter Emily are in the training band, and Penny’s eldest daughter Zoe is a front row cornet player in the main band.
