COMMUNITY-MINDED people are urgently needed to help run a centre for residents of Lostock Gralam.

The call comes from Liz Wood, vice-chairman of the committee which runs Lostock Gralam Community Centre.

The committee has been without a secretary for a number of months, and the treasurer is due to stand down in April.

“There are a lot of things we want to do, but it’s a matter of finding the time for the few of us on the committee,” said community centre vice-chairman Liz Wood.

“If we had more help it would take the pressure off and enable us to do more.”

The community centre is sending a newsletter to new homes in the area to publicise the range of activities on offer and to encourage people to become involved.

Plans for 2014 include offering computer training courses using laptops bought with a grant from Manchester Airport.

The courses could teach numeracy and literacy and help people put CVs together.

“We are going to install the computers in the committee room for the whole community to use,” said Mrs Wood.

“We are also planning to continue our refurbishment this year, and are hoping to replace the guttering and downspouts at the centre and the ageing tables and chairs.”

Anyone interested in the secretary or treasurer roles should contact centre chairman Jackie Garner at the centre.

Groups hiring the hall include parents and toddlers, a youth club, pensioners’ bingo, yoga, Tiny Talk and dance, and residents hire the hall for private parties.
