NORTHWICH proved it has got talent in open auditions that saw a wealth of hopefuls brave the judging panel for a place in the final.

A total of 32 acts took to the stage on Sunday with singers, dancers and musicians vying to win Northwich’s Got Talent and scoop the £500 first prize.

The competition has been organised by Northwich Carnival Committee as a fundraiser for the carnival and for local charities.

Barbara Turner, committee president and secretary, said: “We had an excellent turn out and have really unearthed some talent.”

The judging panel, made up of Gina Bebbington, Guardian chief reporter, Nick Hughes, chief executive of Development of the Arts in Northwich (DAN), and Gaynor Sinar, a Cheshire West and Chester councillor, chose 11 acts to go through to the final, which will take place at Winnington Park Recreation Club at 7.30pm on Saturday, January 25.

Nick said: “It was great to see so many people entering and such a variety, the singer-songwriters deserve a special mention.

“There was a good mix of styles, from rock ‘n’ roll through to the musicals and even a bit of light opera.”

Gaynor said: “There was a really high standard and all ages were represented – I’m really looking forward to the final now.”

Barbara said: “It’s going to be a really good show, please come and support it.”

Tickets, priced £5 for adults and £3 for children and concessions, are available at Gaynor’s Curtain Magic, in the Bull Ring, at the DAN office, in Northwich Library, online at danarts.org or by ringing 01606 76113.

The event is sponsored by Northwich Town Council, HD Travel, Roberts Bakery, Garnett Car Wash, Stagecoach Theatre Arts and Bunby, Wash and Reach.
