IN may be no spring chicken in theatrical terms, but Hobson’s Choice, Altrincham Garrick’s latest production, is still a great play.

Watching Will Mossop struggling to cope with both a father-in-law and a wife he’s terrified of makes for some genuinely hilarious scenes.

But the worm does turn in Harold Brighouse’s Lancashire classic and watching Will, a likeable but simplee soul, put Henry Hobson in his place still leaves audiences glowing with satisfaction.

Maureen Casket is a very capable pair of hands when it comes to directing and she brings out a particularly memorable performance from Adam Gonet as Will. His comic timing is flawless and I’d even go as far to say this is his best performance to date on the Garrick stage.

Also good value is Ali Davenport as Henry’s eldest daughter Maggie and Brian Tickle as the dethroned patriarch himself. When these two lock horns you know they’ll only be one winner - Maggie is a woman not to be trifled with.

Hobson’s Choice is good, clean fun that will appeal to all ages and, despite the play’s over exposure, it’s very difficult not to fall for its cosy, northern charm.

In saying that, the Garrick has the talent to do at least one production a season that is cutting edge and doesn't have one eye on the box office. * Until May 5. The box office is on 0161 928 1677. Star rating - ****
