Waterways to boost mid Cheshire tourism

Northwich Guardian: Clr Alison Gerrard, Northwich town mayor, and Clr Paul Edwards, Middlewich town mayor, take the tiller on the Wandering Duck. Clr Alison Gerrard, Northwich town mayor, and Clr Paul Edwards, Middlewich town mayor, take the tiller on the Wandering Duck.

THE three towns of mid Cheshire are joining forces to make the most of their waterways.

Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich town councils have started working together to promote the Weaver Valley as a tourist destination and think the canal and river network is the key.

Dignitaries and business leaders embarked on hotel boat the Wandering Duck to explore the potential of the network as a unique transport link between the towns as well as its tourism value.

Chris Shaw, Northwich Town Council clerk, said: “Basically we want to promote the Weaver Valley and the three towns.

“We could organise weekend trips in the summer between Middlewich, Winsford and Northwich.

“The other thing we are looking at down the canal is a bike trail from Middlewich to Northwich, just to join everything up really.”

The Wandering Duck is based at the edge of Derbyshire so mid Cheshire’s Trent and Mersey Canal was a new experience for owners Mark Bratt and Ruth Seneviratne-Bratt.

Mark said: “It’s the first time we’ve been here and the canals here are just beautiful, then there’s the Anderton Boat Lift, which is one of the biggest features of the canal anywhere in the country.

“You don’t have to go far from Middlewich and you’re in the middle of nowhere.

“Then there’s all the salt works and industrial stuff, it’s completely different in such a short journey.

“You go from the middle of nowhere to industry and all surrounded by reasonably big towns ¬– it’s such a nice mix of stuff in such a short space.”

Town leaders hope that if the waterways become a tourist destination it will encourage visitors to stop off in the three towns and make the most of attractions like the boat lift and the Lion Salt Works.

Winsford has some very good charity shops, tattoo parlours and cheap booze outlets.

There are also ample betting shops if you like a flutter.

The choice of pound shops is second only to Northwich.

How do you justify taking the time to spoil positive news? The fact that the towns and dignitaries are working together with a common goal is good news, the fact that people are waking up to the opportunities and striving to make things happen gives reason to at least hope. If you have not yet signed the petition for The Inclined Plane, please do, the potential for leisure tourism on our doorstep is very real, if we can be bothered. Here's the link for those who can :)

Damon,

I fully support anything that improves Winsford and promotes Winsford.

My article was both a dig at our town mayor and the local paper. I do not know if our town mayor was at the photo opportunity or not, but found it frustrating as a Winsford resident that the Middlewich and Northwich mayors get their photograph in an article involving WINSFORD in the WINSFORD Guardian.

I have already signed the petition about the vertical plane as I am extremely bothered about Winsford, hence why I take the time to criticise our lacklustre council and their underachievements.

First of all Mr Parkinson, try using a full stop occasionally, it helps the reader better understand what you are trying to say.

Secondly maybe the WINSFORD Guardian would like to explain why they published an article about Winsford, Middlewich and Northwich, but made no mention of the Winsford Mayor its Councillors. In its article they felt obliged to show both the Northwich and Middlewich mayor, but made no mention of representatives from Winsford. Biased reporting perhaps ?

And thirdly I would love to stand for Council as I certainly believe I cannot do a worse job than our current crop of councillors and I look forward to doing battle with you next May.

There were 3 boat trips, the aim of which were to demonstrate that Winsford, Northwich and Middlewich are working together to showcase the potential of the Weaver Valley as a tourist destination; to promote the Winsford Salt Fair and Regatta in September and the Middlewich 'Great War' event a week later; to highlight from a different perspective the regeneration works planned and already completed along the River Weaver, - and to demonstrate that narrowboats can actually visit Winsford.

The first boat trip took place along a short stretch of the canal in Middlewich on the evening on Monday 16th June and the reason why the Winsford Town Mayor isn't in the photograph is that she was Chairing a meeting of Winsford Town Council that evening. The Mayor, along with several other Councillors and representatives of the Weaver Navigation Society travelled on the boat from Northwich to Winsford the following afternoon.

The Town Council is working closely with the Weaver Navigation Society and other partners on 'New Dawn' proposals to maximise the potential of the river and Flashes at Winsford as a boating destination. Works are already taking place around the marina in readiness for the Salt Fair and Regatta in September.

There are wonderful opportunities for Winsford to move forward, and the Town Council along with its partners are working hard to turn aspirations into reality. There is an impetus building and the inclined plane proposal isn't as fanciful as it may have appeared until recently. Winsford has great potential and by working together we can make things happen. That's what the Town Council is trying to do.

If you are thinking of taking a boat trip please remember Safety First.

Always tell someone where you are going so if you get into difficulties they can send for help.

Although our canals are often quite shallow at the sides they can be quite deep at the centre so a life jacket is essential.

Most of the waterways around northwich and Barnton are full of old bikes and other rubbish that can present a hazard to the unwary swimmer.

Locks can be quite a challenge for the novice so don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Beware of flammable liquids in confined spaces, the vapours can be very hazardous if they build up in the bilge. It's always advisable to extinguish cigarettes and oil lamps before handling petrol.

Remember Think Safe, we want you to enjoy your holiday in the canal.

Here we go again! Arguing over plans that will require someone being paid thousands of pounds to make fancy drawings then thousands of pounds being spent on correcting mistakes on the plan, then the plan being shelved due to lack of cash.
It is simple. The three councils put up money for several boats to go up and down our waterways for the enjoyment and education of their constituents. They also put up money to sort out a cycle way connecting all three towns. Problem? No money. So it is put out to private tender who charge the earth to re-coup their costs and the whole thing folds inside two years.
My answer? Increase the rates. Sorry, the government won't let you do that. So all in all another talking shop closes. Great idea but no chance of ever happening so Winsfordites stop worrying you will be left out, there will be nothing to be left out of.
