I AM swiftly losing faith in democracy.

Indeed, I am asking myself what is the point of voting when the people we elect say one thing at election time and do another once they get to Westminster.

Take the Brexit debacle as a prime example.

Over the past five years, the people have clearly let their feelings be known with regards to the European Union.

The European Election in 2014 – which was won by UKIP – was a clear message that the British public was fed up with the European Union.

In 2015, the Tories won an outright majority with a promise of a referendum on our EU membership.

In 2016, the majority of the electorate voted to leave the EU, which meant leaving both the customs union and the single market.

At the 2017 General Election, both Conservative and Labour candidates stood on manifestos stating that they would uphold the Brexit vote.

Therefore, it is disgusting that Tory and Labour MPs, who make up 85 per cent of the House of Commons, are not standing by their manifesto commitments and are prevaricating.

If they didn’t want to leave the EU then they should have told the electorate in 2017, not stand on fake manifestos which they had no intention of upholding.

Therefore, I have to ask what is the point of democracy when the MPs elected wilfully lie to the voters at election time and refuse to enact their promises once they have their backsides places on the green leather of the House of Commons.
