THE news on the Guardian front page last week about the £350k fine imposed on TATA Chemicals Europe for breaches of safety regulations is very worrying for the thousands of local people opposed to the company’s plans to build a large waste incinerator in Lostock.

To remind readers, the proposed plant would be about the size of Wembley Stadium and would burn over 1,600 tonnes of garbage every single day, all brought in from outside Cheshire on hundreds of HGVs using King Street and Griffiths Road.

When CHAIN collected more than 20,000 signatures on its petition against incinerators several years ago, we discovered that people were most worried about potential health hazards, pollution and safety of the plant, particularly because it would be located in what is an expanding residential area.

I suggest readers take a look at the ugly monster garbage burner in Runcorn or speak to any of the people who have the misfortune to live near it.
