JUST a note of appreciation for Paul Hurley’s excellent series of articles about our old hostelries.
Last week he wrote about The Old Star, Swanlow Lane, Winsford.
Readers might like to know that this public house is one of the oldest in the area.
It was known as The Starr as early as the 1780s when owned by the Tomkinson family of Bostock Hall and occupied by Mr Darlington.
The premises are recorded as an ale house over 60 years before that, when it was occupied by Thomas Holbrook.
No doubt it has its origins even earlier and therefore to have been a popular haunt and serving the local community for at least three centuries – and long may it remain so.
