1874 Northwich and Winsford United each earned three points on Tuesday night in pursuit of finishing the season in the play-offs places.

Chris Herbert’s 1874 bounced back from a disappointing 1-0 home loss to fellow promotion chasers Brocton on Saturday with a 3-1 home win against Midland League Premier Division bottom side Uttoxeter Town.

They had to overcome a potentially unsettling early setback when they lost the services of defender Max Harrison through injury after only four minutes.

That mission was helped by going in front after 13 minutes when Craig Pritchard scored his first goal for the club, volleying into the top corner.

The visitors levelled six minutes later through David Ndene as 1874 were warned that they had a scrap on their hands.

John McGrath made the half-time team talk a little more comfortable shortly before the break when he cut inside and curled a strike beyond the keeper’s reach for 2-1.

Jacson Coppack completed the scoring in the 74th minute with a lovely dinked finish after being sent through on goal by McGrath.

As a result, the league table shows a rise back up to third for 1874, who are away on Saturday to a ninth-placed Lye Town side still in the hunt for promotion themselves.

Also on Tuesday Winsford United inflicted this season's widest margin of defeat on form side Brocton at Barton Stadium.

Captain Steve Jenyons netted twice while Blake Robinson and Elliott Coleman also got in on the act in the 4-0 triumph.

Brocton had won their five previous league matches, so this was a good scalp for Blues who stay 10th on the ladder, six points behind the play-offs pace but with four games in hand.

Winsford host lowly Highgate United on Saturday and then go to Stourport Swifts on Tuesday.
