BOXING Day football has a special feel all of its own and this year will be no different with the matches featuring our local sides on Friday being eagerly anticipated.

Top of the list is the 'Green derby’, Northwich Victoria hosting 1874 Northwich at the Apec Taxis Stadium in Runcorn, kick-off 3pm.

There is extra spice in that both sides are in hot pursuit of not only promotion but the league title itself, just past the halfway stage of the season.

Vics currently lead the Midland Football League Premier Division table, while 1874 Northwich are second - five points behind although having played a game more.

Last Boxing Day at Townfield ended in a 0-0 stalemate, but when Vics were last hosting on August 26, 2024, the visitors went home with a 4-1 win in their pockets.

In fact, Vics have not defeated their fiercest rivals in a league match for almost seven years but do have two Mid Cheshire Cup semi-final successes to look back on fondly since then.

Meanwhile, Witton head into their home encounter with Nantwich Town on Friday, kick-off 3pm, buoyed by their return to winning ways at Chasetown on Saturday.

Winsford United host Whitchurch Alport while Barnton will entertain Runcorn Town, also 3pm kick-offs, in Boxing Day’s other local affairs.
