CHRIS Herbert feels there is an area to 1874 Northwich’s game from which they should be scoring more goals.
They netted plenty from set-pieces last season and the Greens’ manager believes the opportunities are being presented but not capitalised upon as often as 1874 could this term in the Midland Football League Premier Division.
Central defender Mark Jones did bag 1874’s second goal in Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Dudley Town from a Kyle Worsley corner.
“We’re a big side and we should be doing a lot better off set-pieces because some of the deliveries we put in are unreal,” said Herbert, whose eighth-placed side host second-from-bottom Highgate United on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
“We need to capitalise more on them because we create a lot and we were dangerous with every one against Dudley.
“The only time we never did a long one and did a short one, we lost it and sent them on the attack. It works, you put it in the box and cause havoc and that’s the main idea of it.
“We just need to pick up points now. We have to build on Saturday, because that was still a good result.
“When a side is around you it’s important you don’t get beat. Obviously you want to win the game but it’s important you don’t get beat.”
With striker Mike Hayes sidelined with injury for four to six weeks, former Witton Albion frontman moved up front against Dudley and scored his first goal for the club.
That wasn’t the only change, with midfielder Sekouba Camara making his first start since arriving from Flint Mountain.
“He was very good and got the man of the match award. He’s got good pace and puts himself about, not giving people a second on the ball and that’s what we’ve been missing sometimes especially when you’re at home and you need to change your game a little bit,” said Herbert, who revealed he now has a fully fit squad to select from other than Hayes.
“I’d say it helped us on Saturday, with Rob up front as well.
“I thought it was an exciting game. I thought we deserved to win it, which is credit to us because we haven’t played a lot of football lately,” he said.
“I thought performance wise you want the three points and I think we’d have deserved it but you don’t always get what you deserve in football. You need that bit of luck sometimes.”
