STEVE Burr says 1874 Northwich will ‘get there’ with their aim of contending for promotion at the season’s end.

The assistant manager was speaking after ’74 returned to winning ways on Monday, 2-1 at Stone Old Alleynians – a result which followed two poor performances but places them fifth in the Midland League Premier Division.

“From last season, we’ve lost some influential players and it’s been quite a tough start to the season but we go again, we look to change things round and move one or two on if they’re not up to what we’re looking for, but everybody showed good energy and good performances (on Monday) which was pleasing,” said Burr.

1874 went into bank holiday weekend with three new dual registration signings from Leek Town, including the return of last season’s skipper and centre half Matty Fenton, along with midfielder Will Arnold and striker Tom Lawrence.

“We still need to strengthen the squad. We’ve got Matty Fenton back from Leek, and he was called back (on Monday) and we understand that, but he was a big part of what we did last year.

“The same with Tom Morris and you take people like that out of your squad and it’s always going to be a tough ask.

“We’ve lost quite a core of last season’s side so although it’s not rebuilding, the players that have been missing it’s not as easy as it looks to fill that gap especially with the quality that they were.

“But we’ll get there because we want to be up there again competing.”

1874 welcome 14th-place Lye Town to Townfield on Saturday, 3pm.

Meanwhile, Northwich Victoria are currently third in the same division after their strong start to the season and will be fully tested away to early table toppers Dudley Town on Saturday before hosting Whitchurch Alport next Wednesday at APEC Taxis Stadium, Runcorn, 7.45pm.

“It’s exciting but we’re level headed, we’re three games in and it’s been a solid start but the challenges keep coming and no more than Saturday away at another contender for the division so we’ll keep working to try and progress,” said Vics co-manager Luke Goddard.

Also in the same league, fourth-placed Winsford United host winless Romulus on Saturday, 3pm.
