WINNINGTON Park resumed where they had left off after ending a six-week wait to play a league fixture last weekend.

An 18th successive victory in South Lancs/Cheshire Division Two leaves them tied on points with Liverpool Collegiate, although the men from Burrows Hill have two games in hand.

“We were just glad to play,” said head coach Matt Farr.

“The lads were rusty to start with, but soon got into their stride.

“It was bitterly cold with a driving wind, although that didn’t stop them.”

Scrum-half Matt Cross was first to touch down midway through the opening period after receiving a pass from Danny Williams.

A quickly-taken tap penalty led to Harry Stubbs driving to the line, establishing a 10-0 lead at the interval.

Williams again turned provider when he off-loaded to Will Morrillo and the Cheshire under 18s wing man went over in the corner.

Cameron Flanagan’s converted successfully.

Winnington had complete control, and Stubbs scored another trademark try to increase their advantage and secure a bonus-point.

They continued to apply pressure though, and Aaron Brown added his name to a list of try-scorers after captain Dave Cross had charged forward inside Congleton territory.

Farr sent on replacements Will Burgess, Dan Snowden and Jamie Pugh, and an injection of energy led to another try.

This time a 10-metre driving maul was too strong for the home team’s defence, and Stubbs claimed his third score of the contest.

Congleton continued to battle, and avoided a whitewash when they notched a consolation score after the ball had squirmed from Stubbs’ grasp.

Park host Aspull, opponents that have promotion hopes of their own this season, at Burrows Hill on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
