GRANGE School hurdler James Webster came closest of mid Cheshire’s contingent to winning a medal at the weekend’s Aviva English Schools’ Track and Field Championship.

The 17-year-old ran a lifetime best of 55.06sin the senior boys’ 400m hurdles final at Gateshead International Stadium, placing fifth.

Competing in Cheshire’s colours, he finished third in Friday’s first heat on a sodden track.

Results were mixed elsewhere, Katie Gerrard (Grange School) missing out on a place in the inter girls’ 1,500m final despite clocking her second fastest time of the year so far.

Sir John Deane’s College student Torz Anderson fared well in the field, placing sixth in the senior girls’ high jump with a best of 1.66m.

County club and schools’ champion Adrian Tomlinson, in the same event, was seventh in the inter boys’ class with 1.87m.

Back on track, County High School Leftwich pupil Elliot Bowker was disappointed to run well outside of his personal best in the inter boys’ 3,000m, finishing in a lowly 19th.

Sprinter Jack Seddon (Sir John Deane’s College) was unlucky to miss out on a place in the senior boys’ 100m final, clocking 11.05s on his way to third position in the first round’s third heat.
