There were goals galore in this afternoon’s football, with Witton Albion and Northwich Victoria both picking up dominant victories.
Barnton were also on track to join them before their match was abandoned due to a serious injury, but it was a disappointing afternoon for 1874 Northwich and Winsford United.
Here is what happened on Saturday…
Witton Albion and Northwich Victoria run riot
Witton got any frustration they may have been feeling about back-to-back 3-1 losses at Chasetown and Clitheroe firmly out of their system as they returned to home soil.
It initially looked like they would be on for more disappointment when visitors Runcorn Linnets took a sixth-minute lead through Nick Rushton, but Ben Harrison’s side stormed back.
Danny Kerr levelled matters before Deji Sotona put the hosts in front just before the interval, with Albion stretching clear after the restart.
Ben Holmes, Wade Rutherford and Joe Edwards were all on target in the second half as Witton secured a 5-1 victory.
Vics went one better by hitting six past Dudley Town in the Midland Football League Premier Division while keeping a clean sheet in the process.
Mama Djabi netted twice in three minutes towards the end of the first half to give Lee Duckworth’s side control of the game, which they firmed up in the game’s final quarter.
Elliot Rokka and Joe Duckworth scored quickfire goals to put the game beyond the visitors before Will Lloyd’s late brace completed a dominant afternoon.
Winsford United lose top spot, 1874 Northwich’s trouble deepens
Vics’ win keeps things very tight at the top of the MFL Premier Division, where Winsford United dropped from the summit.
Following a 1-0 defeat at Brocton this afternoon, Blues’ winless run now stretches to six matches in all competitions as their fine start to the season continues to lose momentum.
Jake Thomas’ goal on the stroke of half time decided the game, with Winsford now down to second behind new leaders Abbey Hulton United while Vics are two points further back in fourth, albeit having played five games fewer than their neighbours.
Back in the NPL West and 1874 Northwich continue to struggle with only goal difference now keeping them off the foot of the table.
Rory Fallon’s side lost 3-0 at Clitheroe on Saturday afternoon, with Harry Scarborough and Sean Newton netting for the hosts before 1874’s Tom Mitchell was sent off to reduce the visitors to 10 men just after the hour mark.
Jason Gilchrist then added a third to complete another difficult afternoon for Greens, who are now 10 points adrift of safety.
Serious injury sees Barnton match abandoned
Barnton looked set to extend their superb recent form against Market Drayton Town at Townfield Lane, only for their game to be brought to an unplanned early halt.
After a goalless first half, the Villagers had stormed out of the traps to take a 3-0 lead with James Sigsworth and Tom Stanton among the scorers.
However, a Market Drayton player then suffered a serious injury to force the match to be abandoned.
