NORTHWICH rowers did themselves, their club, and town proud with their performances at Henley Royal Regatta.

George Lawton, Harry Taylor, Leon Langmead, and Dylan Howard only bowed out of the Wyfold Challenge Cup at the quarter-finals stage with a narrow defeat to the current Australian national champions.

Superb victories over Derby and RV Detteln of Germany in the preceding days by the Northwich Rowing Club quartet handed them the tasty but toughest of tests against last year’s finalists Sydney RC in the prestigious coxless fours event on the River Thames.

"Our lads rose to the challenge magnificently," said a club statement.

"In a fiercely contested race, Sydney managed to edge out to a lead of just one boat length.

"Despite a relentless push from our crew all the way down the course, the Australians held that advantage to the line.

"Results tell only part of the story.

"It’s hard to capture in writing the atmosphere at Henley Royal Regatta—with average daily crowds of around 30,000—and the pressure of competing on one of the biggest stages in world rowing.

"To perform with such determination, composure, and courage against the very best is something of which everyone at the club can be immensely proud."

Northwich’s coxless four are coached by Jed Barlow and Denis O’Neill.
