WEAVER Valley Cycling Club hosted a round of the British Cycling North West Cyclo Cross League on the Cheshire Showground at Tabley in damp and drizzly conditions.

More than 230 riders competed in age groups ranging from under eights to over 60s.

The 3km course included a giant spiral, tight switchbacks and some challenging steep mounds, and this coupled with the slipperyy, muddy surface required tenacity and concentration from the riders.

Tyre choice was critical, with some riders resorting to running even the flat sections because of lack of traction.

The winner of the elite men's race was Oscar Shaw from the Grit Cartel, with Benjamin Horrobin from 360Cycling in second and over 55s rider Nick Craig from Scott Pioneer in third.

The elite women's race was won by Josephine Hurst from the Grit Cartel, with under 23s rider Layla Bradbook from MI Racing in second, and Verity Appleyard from Velo Fixers in third.

Representing Weaver Valley were Nick Butterworth (second in the over 65s age group), Matthew Hornby, Jamie Walker, Dave Walker and Eleanor Underhill, as well as novice under eights riders Charlie Wood and Jasmine McAllister Handley, all demonstrating grit and determination in such tricky conditions.

The race was organised by Weaver Valley's Kevan Underhill and was supported by more than 30 club and league volunteers, who braved the weather all weekend, laying the course on Saturday, then after dark on Sunday retrieving 6km of muddy tape and poles.
