WINNINGTON Park struggled to break down the Widnes defence and fell to defeat on Saturday.
The game was in the balance until the very late stages though when Wids crossed for the match-clinching try.
Park, with a couple of changes due to unavailability, led briefly on two occasions but were unable to open up a cushion.
Early on, Park went through 10 phases in the Widnes 22 moving the ball well but the defence stayed strong.
Park continued to enjoy the majority of possession and pressure was mounted without reward.
After a couple of errors, Widnes got some field position and earned a penalty which was kicked for a 3-0 lead.
Park were looking the more threatening side and crossed for the first try on 31 minutes.
After Jacob Halstein fielded the ball on Park’s 10-metre line, he fed Alex De Keyzer who beat three defenders from the halfway line to score in the corner.
Widnes started to stretch Park with their attack, and although the visitors stayed strong they were caught offside in their 22 and Widnes opted for the points to take a slim lead at half-time.
Minor errors and composure were affecting the attack of both sides at the start of the second period.
Widnes came closest when they were held up over the line on 46 minutes.
A series of penalties led to Park having the opportunity to kick for goal and take a two-point lead.
The next quarter of an hour was a dogfight with a couple of glimpses of what Park could bring but again errors were stunting their ability for points.
Widnes nudged ahead with their first try from close range to lead 11-8 going into the last 10 minutes.
And it was Widnes, from a penalty, who were able to muster the winning play.
Their fly-half made a break with support from a centre and scored between the posts to leave Park frustrated.
