IN a week that sees their focus switch to cup competitions, Winsford United got off to a good start.
Ahead of their FA Vase third round proper clash with Prestwich Heys at Barton Stadium on Saturday, kick off 3pm, Blues moved into the last eight of the Midland Football League Cup in comfortable fashion in midweek.
Stone Old Alleynians were beaten 3-0 on Tuesday night, with the majority of the damage done in the first half as Winsford took a two-goal lead into the break.
Matty Birchall’s accomplished finish opened the scoring for the hosts before a Reece Davies’ strike doubled the lead.
There was even time for Sam Elliot to mark his Blues debut with a goal as he converted the rebound after Niza Chilufya saw his initial effort saved.
Winsford have another midweek game next week as they return to MFL Premier Division action with a trip to AFC Wolverhampton City on Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm.

Also in the Midland League on Saturday, eighth-placed 1874 Northwich host second-from-bottom Highgate United, and leaders Northwich Victoria head to 11th-placed Whitchurch Alport, both games kicking off at 3pm.
Meanwhile, Witton Albion will be looking to start the new month as they finished the last one when they travel to Trafford on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
Ben Harrison’s side went unbeaten in their final three matches in November, with draws with Sporting Khalsa and Bootle coming either side of their impressive victory over promotion favourites Bury.
They sit 15th in the NPL West Division table ahead of their visit to the league’s bottom club, with Trafford having won just twice all season.
Barnton also face a road trip to their division’s bottom side on Saturday as they take on their third away fixture in a row.
The Villagers will be looking to maintain their position in the North West Counties League First Division South play-off places when they travel to Wolverhampton Sporting Community, who prop up the rest with just one victory all season.
Barnton have already beaten Saturday’s hosts on their own patch this season in the Edward Case Cup in October, winning a penalty shoot-out after their tie finished 1-1.
