WITTON Albion and Northwich Victoria both enjoyed perhaps the biggest results of their season in what was a “super Saturday” for them.

In a game watched by more than 900 fans at the U Lock It Stadium, Albion ran out superb 3-0 victors over high-flying title favourites Bury in a game that featured two missed penalties and a sending-off.

Thankfully for Ben Harrison’s men, the penalty they missed did eventually lead to their opening goal – Joe Duckworth saw his spot-kick saved but he stooped to head home the rebound.

After the break, Freddy Garbutt then doubled Witton’s lead before goalkeeper Cameron Terry produced heroics by denying Kieran Glynn from 12 yards after the visitors were awarded a penalty of their own.

And even though the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Ben Dufton-Kelly was dismissed, they went on to net again as Joel Bembo-Leta rounded off the scoring.

Witton handed a debut to exciting winger Christy Edwards, who has signed on loan from Wigan Athletic.

Edwards has been at Wigan since the age of 13 and has a determination to take on his opponents.

Meanwhile, Harry Davis was Vics’ injury-time hero as they climbed back to the top of the Midland Football League Premier Division.

Davis netted two minutes into stoppage time to secure a 1-0 victory and hand hosts and fellow high-fliers Hanley Town their first league defeat of the campaign.

The result takes Vics back above Abbey Hulton United, who were not in action on Saturday, and gives them a two-point cushion having played two fewer games.

Elsewhere in the MFL Premier Division, 1874 Northwich were denied the chance to close in on a play-off spot as their scheduled trip to Brocton fell victim to a waterlogged pitch.

In the North West Counties First Division South, a nightmare start proved fatal for Barnton as they lost 3-0 at home to Eccleshall.

The Villagers found themselves 2-0 down after just five minutes at Townfield Lane with Nicky Parker and Daniel Glover striking for the visitors before Glover rounded off the scoring midway through the second half.
