Mid Cheshire county women's team:

Last Sunday Mid Cheshire women's county side took their place in the Mavis Dearden semi final.

They were drawn against Burton & District.

Mid Cheshire chose Castle Sports as their home venue and Burton chose Stretton Bowls Club as theirs.

At 2pm on Sunday no one there had any idea that after over four hours of bowling the four teams (two at each venue) would be no further apart.

Castle was very quick for the first, then slowed down over the rest of the match.

Mid Cheshire’s first four at Castle got them off to a good start as they all won.

When Castle is quick sometimes what looks like a bad bowl, for example a yard short, is quite difficult to beat.

Mid Cheshire players were struggling early on but pulled out some particularly good bowls, just to keep in contention as they got used to the pace.

They ended the day with 10 winners and two losers.

At Castle, Mid Cheshire v Burton: Tamsin Birkett 21-17 Wendy Jackson, Sue Worrall 21-14 Harriet Nettel, Nicola Boulton 21-8 Lisa Hartley, Viv Raddy 21-15 Janet Needham, Mandy Maxwell 21-19 Danniella Hartshorn, Wendy Allen 21-10 Joanne Smith, Paula Gamon 21-19 Tori Hartshorn, Joan Nicholas 15-21 Ami Stone-Payne, Andrea Bell 15-21 Sharon Jenkinson, Annie Jones 21-7 Helen Jackson, Dawn Nield 21-11 Linda Wheeldon, Stacey Linegar Orange 21-9 Anne Shaw.

At the away green Burton had a slightly better 11 winners to Mid Cheshire’s one.

At Stretton, Burton v Mid Cheshire: Barbara Lowe 21-10 Debbie Giittins, Tracey Mosley 21-16 Sophie Riley, Lynn Wilkins 21-14 Dot Barker, Shelley Smith 13-21 Paula Whelan, Angela Dutton Best Result 21-9 Kiera Wharton, Phoebe Harrison 21-13 Bethany Mathias, Olivia Ede 21-15 Lisa Downes, Kirsty Legrice 21-20 Emma Webb, Liz Merrick 21-9 Judith Lickley, Dannii Cordin 21-18 Carly Williams, Ami Insley 21-16 Hazel Williams, Karen Cross 21-14 Linda Hough.

So, at 2pm the match started at 0-0, four-and-a-half hours later the match ended 415-415.

Both teams were unsure of the rule that would give a winner but it sadly became clear that Burton went through on most matches won on the day.

It was one of the best games I have seen, the last two on at home pulled back 22 points to tie the match.

If one of any of the 48 bowlers had got one extra point they would have won a place in the final for their team.

Mid Cheshire League:

Premier, Castle Sports A stayed in the top spot with a home win against Helsby A 210-70.

In Section Three, with some clubs having had both their byes, I am going to place teams in their relative position after everyone has their bye.
