TOWN rugby rivals Northwich and Winnington Park have agreed instead of only competing for pride and local bragging rights, each future contest will be for a unique prize.
On the day England hosted Scotland at Twickenham for the Calcutta Cup, and England cricketers took on Ashes rivals Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy, the decision was made that an Ashes-style urn will be presented to the victorious outfit of future derby battles.
The urn will contain the ashes of burnt rugby socks from both Northwich and Winnington Park and will be held by the triumphant team until the other side wins.
The decision for the urn was agreed between both clubs’ chairmen, Blacks’ Andy Naylor and Park’s Paul Dean, at a recent pre-match meal.
Naylor said: “The rivalry between our two clubs has always been a very keen contest in the past and Paul Dean and I have agreed to add a little more spice to future matches.”
Dean added “Pride and bragging rights have been all both clubs have played for in the past but now the urn will add a bit more incentive to both teams for a prestigious presentation prize for the victors.”
