JOHN Brotherton has reached an incredible rugby milestone but the 42-year-old says there is more to come.
‘Beefy’, as he is known to his teammates at Northwich Rugby Club, has now made 300 senior appearances, after featuring on the bench for the first team at Firwood Waterloo at the weekend.
Blacks’ director of rugby, who is described as ‘the ultimate team player who gives nothing less than 100 per cent when he crosses the white line’, is also considered a clubman through and through.
To have played so many games is a testament to his dedication and fitness.
‘Beefy’ has been the cornerstone of the first team through many successful seasons, proving an integral part of many promotion, Cheshire Vase and EDF Cup winning squads.
He remains fundamental to the teams and the club.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the training sessions and the intensity and enjoyment brought by all characters during my time at Northwich and it’s not over yet,” said Brotherton, who joined the club when he was a nipper.
As a junior player he gained Cheshire honours from under 14s to under 17s, then he quickly became a regular starter in the Northwich first team after making his debut aged 18.
He had a spells at New Brighton and Lymm RUFC but returned after two seasons to reinvigorate his hometown club.
Chairman Andy Naylor said: “John has been a great servant to the club.
“To play in the demanding position of prop forward for so long is a massive achievement.
“He remains a very popular player and person with everybody associated with the club, to which he has given so much.
“This has been duly recognised when he accepted the additional role of director of rugby.”
With his extensive leadership experience, Brotherton will continue to lead from the front.
“I was excited to have the opportunity to become director of rugby and accept a new challenge,” he said.
“My role is about bringing together our fantastic rugby family of players, volunteers in all areas and our supporters.
“It is about looking to create a pathway from U6 to our most senior team, enabling players of all ages, genders and ambitions to enjoy rugby - my goal being to create an environment that allows players and coaches of different levels and aspirations to maximise their learning experiences for lifetime participation in rugby.
“Finally it is about working with a fine bunch of people and hopefully attracting more of that family to become involved in any way they can, whether it be playing, coaching, or helping.
“The club feels like a family club with many players staying here or returning as they feel an affinity to the club. I feel passionate to do my utmost for all associated with Northwich Rugby Club.”
His wife Natalie was heavily involved as a player in the women’s section and their children are players in the M&Js.
