MUDDY conditions proved a challenge for riders when Weaver Valley Cycling Club hosted a round of the British Cycling North West Cyclo Cross League.

The Leadout Cycles event, organised by Kevan Underhill and a team of volunteers from the club, took place at the Cheshire Showground at Tabley.

Two hundred riders, ranging from under eights to seasoned veterans and from all over the north west, completed a series of 3k laps.

The course included various obstacles including jumps, humps and switchbacks, and became increasingly muddy and difficult, due to the constant rain.

Weaver Valley 's Louise Mainwaring won the senior women's race emphatically, leading second-placed Holly Bradbrook from Team Enable MI Racing by more than a minute; and Eleanor Underhill came 15th, while also winning the over 60s category.

In the men's races, Weaver Valley riders also performed well, with Dave Walker finishing 14th in the over 40s race, Graham Veale 26th in the over 50s field, and Nick Butterworth, riding a mountain bike rather than a cyclo cross bike, 17th in the over 60s.

The winner of the men's senior race was Joe Thorp from the Ribble Racing Team.
