STRIKER Rob Hopley scored the goal that has seen Winsford Town progress to the quarter finals of the Cheshire Amateur Cup.

The player-manager, a former captain of Witton Albion, rose highest in the 52nd minute to seal the deal for the Cheshire League Two newcomers against previously undefeated AFC Alsager, a side flying high in the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division.

The ball had bounced around in the box from a corner before Hopley got his header away.

Town will continue in cup action this coming Saturday as they play host to Wigan Town in the Crewe DFA Saturday Challenge Cup first round at Winsford Academy, Grange Lane, kick-off 2pm.

Winsford are currently third in their division, with three and four games in hand on Pilkington u23s and leaders Clay Brow FC respectively.
