NORTHWICH boxer Luke Caffrey is vowing to make 2023 the year of the prodigy as he prepares for his return to the ring this weekend.

The 26-year-old fights Mwenya Chisanga at the Fuse Roc Centre in Partington on Sunday, looking to take another leap towards national and international recognition.

With three wins from three as a professional, Caffrey already has a growing number of admirers and intends to ramp up his schedule in taking a number of big fights in the next few months.

Caffrey, who hails from Ireland originally, has been working hard under the tutelage of respected coach Frank Collins at the Boxing Fit Academy in Lostock to prepare and after enduring a frustrating end to 2022, the super lightweight wants to make up for lost time.

“I was glad to see the back of last year to be honest, it felt like every match that was made was being cancelled and I was training hard without being able to see the end reward," said Caffrey.

"That’s all behind me now though and I can’t wait to make my mark this year.

"I know within myself I can make a big impact, but I also know what it will take to reach those levels and by the end of this year I really want to be fighting for championships.

"One thing I can guarantee on April 23rd is a big show and performance to match.

"I need to win these fights and win them well to move on to the next stage of my career and that’s what I intend to do, but I won’t be taking Chisanga lightly.

"He’s got good experience and been around a long time, so it’ll be a really good test. Ultimately, my intention is to stop him and take a big step on my journey."

Tickets for the event are available from Caffrey or his coach Frank Collins at Boxing Fit Academy.
