WITTON Albion’s excellent form continued this afternoon as they started 2023 how they finished 2022 – victorious.

Jon Macken’s side were 4-2 winners in a topsy-turvy encounter against Runcorn Linnets to extend their current unbeaten run to seven league matches.

The result allowed them to jump to eighth in the Northern Premier League West Division table and they now sit six points outside the play-off spots.

Albion flew out of the traps, with Joe Duckworth giving them an eighth-minute lead before Elliott Rokka doubled their advantage inside the first quarter.

However, fourth-placed Linnets worked their way back into the game and were level thanks to two Jamie Rainford goals either side of half-time.

Just two minutes after Rainford’s equaliser, however, Duckworth struck again to give Witton a lead they would not relinquish before Sidi Fofana was sent off for the visitors.

As the game ticked into injury time, Connor Hughes finished things off with his eighth goal in five matches.

Elsewhere, a new year did not bring about new fortunes for 1874 Northwich as high-flying Leek Town handed them their fourth consecutive defeat.

Tom Carr’s goal just after the hour mark proved decisive for the second-placed hosts as Greens remain in a tightly-packed bottom half of the table.

Mackenzie O’Neill had equalised for Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison’s side just five minutes before Carr’s winner after Tim Grice had sent the hosts into half-time ahead.
