BARNTON FC picked up their first point of the season on Saturday afternoon as they played out a four-goal thriller with Brocton in NWCFL Division One South at Townfield Lane.

Liam Page’s men got off to a perfect start when Tom Edwards was brought down in the area and Liam Kennington was on hand to empathically dispatch the resulting penalty.

Despite the bright start from the home side the visitors responded well and found themselves controlling long periods of the half and levelled the game through Regan Smith who finished smartly past Arran Lyons in the Barnton goal.

Within seconds of the restart Edwards had given Barnton the lead once again as he struck a superb effort from distance leaving the Brocton keeper with no chance.

The first half ended with the away side having a call for a penalty turned down as they looked to find a way back level.

It only took ten minutes into the second half for Smith to get his second goal of the game and level up the game as he poked home from close range.

For large periods of the second half Brocton looked the more dangerous of the two sides and looked most likely to find a winner, but were ultimately left frustrated as Barnton led by man of the match Jack Duffy dug in to pick up a point.

The game was played in front of members of the Barnton Juniors and Wildcats team who marked England’s historic Euros win with a picture on the pitch with the team and unveiling the club’s new Her Game too Banner.

After the game manager Page was frustrated but saw some positives.

“At times we let them control the game for long periods and obviously being pegged back twice is frustrating,” he said.

“We’ve got the first point now on the board. We’d have loved to have got the win but we go again now with two games on the road this week first up at Ashville on Tuesday night before a trip to Cheadle Heath Nomads on Saturday.”
