THIS is turning into quite a season for the senior colts team at Winnington Park Rugby Club.

Having completed a perfect league season, they are now focused on adding a brace of cups to make it a memorable treble.

On Sunday, they took a step closer to doing just that in dramatic fashion as they reached the final of the Cheshire Cup.

A try in the final minute from inside centre Charlie Hyde secured a 24-21 win away at Caldy, who were 18-3 up at half time before a stirring Park fightback.

“The lads dug deeper than they ever have,” team manager Christopher Sheppard said.

“The lads deserve the win. The whole club is behind them.”

This most excellent of seasons is the culmination of more than a decade of playing together through the junior ranks at Burrows Hill.

After this year, the team will make the step up to senior rugby and hopefully go on to feature in the Park first team.

Through it all, they have been under the charge of proud head coach Charlie De Keyzer.

“The lads played with true heart and never gave up,” he said of Sunday’s breath-taking victory.

“They played right to the last second to secure the win.”

Their progression to the League Cup semi-finals was slightly more serene as they thrashed their Lymm counterparts 48-0 at Burrows Hill earlier this month.

This comes after an outstanding league campaign which saw them win all six of their matches – including notable results against the likes of Manchester, Wirral and Liverpool St Helens – to finish well clear at the top of the table.

Lymm or Wirral will provide their opposition in the Cheshire Cup Final on a date to be confirmed.
